SUMMARY:Beach Exploration for Family and Friends
DESCRIPTION:BI Beach Naturalists invite you to come join us for an exploration of the wonderful rocky tide pools of the intertidal zone at Rockaway Beach Bainbridge Island. \nThis will be the last of the 2024 summer beach explorations on Bainbridge Island. Rockaway Beach is a small conservancy park on the east side of the island. There is a short stairway to the beach. As the tide goes out it leaves behind many small rocky pools that are full of sea life. It’s a wonderful time to sit quietly and watch for small critters as they survive this challenging time exposed to new predators and a completely different environment than they normally have. This beach is also usually covered by a wide variety of seaweeds that create hiding places for many lifeforms. We will gently peek into this world. \nFamilies are welcome. \n\nParking is limited so consider walking\, biking or car pooling. If everyone angle parks it will allow for more vehicles. Additional parking is around the corner and up the hill\, a bit of a walk.\nParticipants at this event will be engaged in walking on uneven terrain\, slippery rocks\, getting hands wet\, and body motions such as bending\, kneeling and squatting on the ground to see the creatures along the shoreline.\nBoots are not required\, but we recommend wearing shoes or boots that can get wet and will protect your feet from the sharp rocks on this beach.\nWhile this is a public beach\, we recommend not bringing your dog\, even leashed\, due to the fragility of the creatures exposed at this extremely low tide. Dogs are naturally curious about wildlife\, so it is important we are good stewards of our shoreline environments.\nService animals are welcome.\n\nThis event is rain or shine!

DESCRIPTION:April is Earth Month\, so choose a day to go out and pick up a nearby roadway or trash-strewn area. Maybe you’ll make it a habit and have it become official by adopting a stretch of road to clean up on a regular basis through the City of Bainbridge Island’s Adopt a Spot program. \nIf you don’t have your own grabber\, trash bags and disposal method\, here’s what you can do: \n\nBorrow a grabber from BI Zero Waste. Email Diane Landry to inquire.\nPick up white trash bags at Bainbridge Disposal’s Coppertop office\, 9423 NE Business Park Ln.\, even outside of business hours. (See photo below of bin containing litter bags.) Take a litter cleanup guideline sheet from the bin\, too.\nFill up bag(s) with roadside litter and place next to your own or a neighbor’s (with permission) trash can\, and during April it will be picked up for free. Or you can drop off the designated litter bag(s) for free at the Bainbridge Disposal Transfer Station during April.\nFill up regular trash bags with recyclables and dispose of relatively clean\, non-flat cans and bottles in your regular recycling. Read below for what to do with dirty or flat cans and bottles.\n\n \nLitter Pick-up Guidelines\nBefore you start \n\nChoose a roadway or lot.\nWear bright\, reflective clothing if picking up along a road.\nUse the white Kitsap trash bag if you want to dispose of litter for free.\nBorrow a grabber\, if you like\, from Zero Waste. Request from bizerowaste@sustainablebainbridge.org.\n\nWhen you finish \n\nSet your white Kitsap bag of trash next to a regular garbage can (with permission if not yours) or take to the transfer station and let the booth attendant know how many bags you have. Bainbridge Disposal is tracking how many bags are collected.\nEmpty your bag of recyclables into your curbside recycling cart. (Do not recycle the plastic bag in the cart.)\nPlease send bizerowaste@sustainablebainbridge.org a short email to say…\n\n\nGeneral location of pick-up\nName of group or organization if a collective clean-up\nNumber of bags of trash\nNumber of bags of recyclables\nOptional:  any photos or anecdotes\n\nWhat to do with certain recyclables you pick up \n\nDirt-filled glass bottles – Put in trash.\nDirty\, cracked plastic bottles – Put in trash.\nLiquid-filled bottles that you can’t empty – Put in trash.\nDirt-filled aluminum cans – Put in trash.\nCompletely flat aluminum cans – Recycle in scrap metal at the BI Senior/Community Center or transfer station or put in the trash. (If flat cans get put in curbside recycling\, they tend to get separated with paper at the sorting facility\,  contaminating the paper stream.)\n\nGeneral safety guidelines \n\nDo not pick up anything hazardous\, sharp\, large or heavy. This includes needles (even if they’re contained)\, chemical containers with liquids\, containers with unknown liquids\, furniture\, tires\, etc.\nWe don’t encourage anyone to empty containers for recycling because they may contain needles or biohazardous liquid.\nHighway cleanups are not advised.\nHigh-vis is required for roadsides.\n\nThank you for helping to keep Bainbridge Island litter-free!

We will meet at 7:45 at Waterfront Park near the public dock\, walk the waterfront trail across to the ferry maintenance area and across Waypoint trail to end at the shoreline between Eagle Harbor condos and the ferry dock. Along the way\, we’ll hear from Hyla students\, WSF ferries\, COBI and others as we talk about king tides as a preview of the risks of sea level rise\, and what we can and should do to prepare and respond to rising tides.

DESCRIPTION:Join BI Metro Parks and our incredible partners for the annual Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service.  From 10am-1pm on Monday\, January 19\, volunteers will come together to make this “a day on\, not a day off.” \nConservation projects for all ages are planned\, including planting native wildflowers\, mulching young plants\, and removing invasive species like ivy\, spurge laurel\, and blackberry.  Parks staff and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to share knowledge about the park and its restoration and provide all the tools needed for the job.  Join us to work as long as you’re able\, plus enjoy a hot drink to warm up! \nRestoration at Blakely Harbor Park has involved thousands of volunteer hours\, thousands of native plants\, and years of dedicated hard work.  Once the site of the largest mill in the world\, Blakely Harbor is now a much beloved park\, connecting to miles of trails and hosting beach access and a birding blind.  But restoration work is ongoing\, with young native plants to care for and plenty of invasive weeds yet to remove.

This helps us track participation and keep in contact with you about the event!Why should I register for the Bainbridge Beach Cleanup?\nSigning up with us helps in a number of ways: we can reach you with important information about the cleanup\, you can help us track the amount of trash we are collecting during the event\, and we have a better sense of the number of folks who want to help and whether we’re actually covering all the shoreline area we are hoping to clean. While you can of course go out any time to pick up shoreline debris at your favorite beach (please!)\, this one-day event is a big concerted effort to cover as much of the Island as possible\, and letting us know you want to participate is a great help. \nDo I need to be part of a team? Can I form my own team?\nYou do not need to be part of a team to participate. Anyone can help— individuals\, couples\, families\, friends\, coworkers. If you would like to make your own team\, all you need is to do is designate a contact person to register and have that person let us know how many of you are in the group. It is that easy! \nHow do I know where to clean that day? Are there assigned locations?\nWe focus on access points at public road ends and public shorelines\, as well as encourage private landowners to use this as an opportunity to remove debris on their properties. The sign-up provides an opportunity for you to indicate where you are planning to go that day\, which will help us get a sense of the coverage across the Island. \nDo I need to sign in that morning?\nNo need to sign in at all. All you need to do is remove as much as trash at your location sometime between 9am and 12:00pm that day. \nWhat if I do not find much trash to collect? What if I do not see much on the beach I am assigned to clean?\nWhat a great problem to have! Due to the influence of winds\, tides\, and local currents\, some beaches might have a lot of trash while others seem to have very little. And some pieces might be really small\, but removing even those tiny pieces helps a lot. Every bit of trash you can remove helps our shoreline environment\, so even if it does not seem like much—you are making a difference! It’s important to note\, too\, that a beach that may not at first seem to have much debris might\, on closer inspection. Microplastics — small pieces of plastic hidden in the sand and beach wrack — are found everywhere. See below\, “Where on the shoreline should I focus\,” for more tips on how to search for debris. \nWhat should I bring?\n\nDress comfortably and appropriately for the weather\, including wearing comfortable walking shoes or rubber boots.\nWear shoes with a good grip — some of our beaches have slippery rocks!\nConsider using sunscreen and bringing a water bottle and gloves.\nA smartphone is great if you have one and would like to download and use the free Clean Swell app to track what you have collected. Ocean Conservancy uses these data to make up their annual worldwide list of the most-collected beach litter. (Aside from tiny foam pieces\, cigarette butts topped the list in 2023.)  The MyCoast.org free app will come in handy if you find objects too big to haul. (See related FAQ.)\nBring bags and/or buckets and gloves for collecting trash.  You can use your own\, or pick up bags and/or buckets to borrow and return at the Miller Road gravel parking lot\, just south of Congregation Kol Shalom and north of New Brooklyn Rd.\, prior to heading out to your site. BI Parks will leave a bin with trash bags at four of the main shoreline parks: Fay Bainbridge\, Blakely Harbor\, Fort Ward and Pritchard. After filling the bags with beach trash\, you may leave them right next to the bin.\n\nAre kids allowed?\nAbsolutely! In fact\, they are encouraged to participate. Please make sure they are under adult supervision\, especially when it comes to picking up trash that could be sharp or dangerous. \nWhat if someone asks why I’m there?\nExplain that you are part of a one-day\, island-wide volunteer beach cleanup where we are doing everything we can to make our beaches more beautiful and healthier for humans and wildlife. Because we are focusing on public road-ends and public shorelines\, we don’t expect your presence in these public areas to be an issue. If someone does ask you to leave their property\, please respect their wishes. \nDo I need to be there throughout the whole event\, 9am to 12pm?\nNo\, we want you to do only as much as you can with the time you have available. If you have a section with very little trash that doesn’t take you very long\, fantastic! If you have a section that has too much trash for you to deal with in the time you have available\, that is okay\, too — please let us know if it is an area you think needs more attention. Email info@sustainablebainbridge.org with the location and information about what you think is needed. \nWhere on the shoreline should I focus?\nFocus your efforts between the high tide-wrack line (this is often where seaweed has piled up\, and where a lot of trash is located) and the water. Keep your eyes peeled for small pieces of plastic as well as larger debris. If you find it necessary to move a rock to remove trash\, please replace those rocks\, as they are often home to ocean life. Also\, there might be items upland of the high tide line that could look like trash but might be private property. If you aren’t sure\, please leave it alone. \nWhat do I do with things that are too big to take with me?\nIf you find an item like this\, the best thing to do is to use the free MyCoast.org app to alert Washington Department of Natural Resources so that our local and state agencies can find and remove the item. Examples of items that are good to report on this app are washed-up boats or boat pieces\, large buoys\, Styrofoam floats\, and creosote logs.  Be sure to snap a photo of it right where it’s located so those coordinates can be used at higher tides to find it again.  If you can’t use this app\, then email info@sustainablebainbridge.org with a location and brief description of its state\, such as whether it is buried. \nWhat do I do with my trash?\nIf you’ve collected a small amount of trash and are willing to just take it home and put it in your garbage\, that works great. Otherwise\, bring your beach trash to our event collection station at the Miller Road gravel parking lot\, located north of New Brooklyn Rd and just south of Congregation Kol Shalom on the east side of Miller Road. The collection station will be open on the day of cleanup between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm. \nHow do I share what I have collected?\nWe have many ways for you to share what you have collected\, including: \n\nUse the free CleanSwell App* (available for Android and iPhone)\nMake a public Facebook post using #bibeachcleanup or share to our Facebook page \nPost pictures on Instagram using the hashtags #bibeachcleanup and #litterati (the latter is a global trash tracking program)\nEmail info@sustainablebainbridge.org\n\n* Interesting factoid: Because of beach cleaners’ record keeping\, we know that 2019 was the first year in which candy wrappers chip bags became the most commonly found beach trash\, surpassing cigarette butts as the top item for the first time. \nHow can I keep plastic off the beach and out of Puget Sound?\nTake the Plastic Pledge.  For one month\, try to change a single-use plastic behavior to see if it becomes a habit! \n\nCollaborating Organizations\nWhy we conduct a beach cleanup…\nThank you for doing your part to help keep the Bainbridge shoreline clean and healthy for everyone!
