SUMMARY:SB Partner - Mending Meetups

Using techniques inspired by one of our favorite books\, Visible Mending\, Allison will help get you started on your way to being a mending maven. I love Allison’s stitching in her mends and the way she adds a fun pop of color. You can do it her way to make your mends fully visible or use her techniques to make mends that are a little less seen. Cost is $25 per session. \nMinimum 3 participants needed to hold class. \nSign up by Wednesday prior to class day.

SUMMARY:SB Partner - Land Trust's Invasive Weed Disposal
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, April 21st and 28th from 10 am to 4 pm. Bainbrige Island Land Trust is here to help you get your yard in order with two days of FREE Invasive Weed Disposal! Bring your weeds to the transfer station and the Land Trust will cover the cost of disposal. \nInvasive plant targets are Scotch broom\, English holly\, English ivy\, Himalayan blackberry\, tansy ragwort\, English laurel\, and the noxious weeds on King County’s “Noxious Weed” list. Please do not mix in non-invasive yard waste. For questions about whether or not something will be accepted\, email Andrew Fraser\, Land Trust Stewardship Manager\, or call (206) 842-1216. \nInvasive plant species are one of the leading causes of vegetation biodiversity loss. They spread quickly and can displace native plants\, prevent new native plant growth\, and create monocultures. Lack of diversity among native plants reduces the quality and quantity of fish and wildlife habitat. Remove your invasives now while the ground is soft and make room for native plants come fall and winter when the weather is best for planting!

SUMMARY:And It Has Pockets!: The Battle for Women's Clothing Equality
DESCRIPTION:Pocket Talk\nSunday\, April 14\, 3-4:30pm at BARN (Bainbridge Atirsans Resource Network)\nRegister here.\nOne of the best ways to make your clothing sustainable is to keep it longer—and people keep useful and practical clothing longer! \nComparisons have shown that modern garments designed for women have about half the storage space of clothing designed for men. From their invention\, pockets in women’s fashion have represented independence—so much so that in the 18th century\, laws were enacted to strip women of their personal liberty by making the contents of their pockets the property of their husband. The right to have pockets went hand-in-hand with the right to vote. And people today are still speaking out about the inequality between men’s and women’s clothing based on this simple storage system.\n\nJoin costume designer Diane Johnston to dig into the pockets of the past\, tracing the history of the humble pocket to determine if the battle for equality may still be decided by a few inches of extremely influential fabric.

SUMMARY:Bainbridge Islandwide Litter Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:April is Earth Month\, so choose a day to go out and pick up a nearby roadway or trash-strewn area. \nKitsap’s Adopt-a-Spot folks and Bainbridge Disposal are making it easy by providing bags and free trash disposal\, respectively. Just stop by the front courtyard of the Bainbridge Disposal office at Coppertop and look for the bin containing bags and a guidelines sheet (see below). Then follow the directions for a successful clean-up.  You can even email Zero Waste to arrange to borrow a grabber. \nBefore you start \n\nChoose a roadway or area.\nWear bright\, reflective clothing if picking up along a road.\nUse the white Kitsap trash bag if you want to dispose of litter for free this April.\nBorrow a grabber\, if you like\, from Zero Waste. Request from bizerowaste@sustainablebainbridge.org.\n\nWhen you finish\nSet your white Kitsap bag of trash next to a regular garbage can (with permission if not yours) or take to the transfer station and let the booth attendant know how many bags you have. Bainbridge Disposal is tracking how many bags are collected.\nEmpty your bag of recyclables into your curbside recycling cart. (Do not recycle the plastic bag in the cart.)\nPlease send bizerowaste@sustainablebainbridge.org a short email to say the following:\n\n\nGeneral location of pick-up\nName of group or organization if a collective clean-up\nNumber of bags of trash\nNumber of bags of recyclables\nOptional but encouraged: photos and anecdotes\n\n         What to do with certain recyclables \n\nDirt-filled glass bottles – Put in trash.\nDirty\, cracked plastic bottles – Put in trash.\nLiquid-filled bottles that you can’t empty – Put in trash.\nDirt-filled aluminum cans – Put in trash.\nCompletely flat aluminum cans – Recycle in scrap metal at the transfer station or put in the trash. (If flat cans get put in curbside recycling\, they tend to get separated with paper at the sorting facility\, contaminating the paper stream.)\n\n           General safety guidelines \n\nDo not pick up anything hazardous\, sharp\, large or heavy. This includes needles (even if they’re contained)\, chemical containers with liquids\, containers with unknown liquids\, furniture\, tires\, etc.\nWe don’t encourage anyone to empty containers for recycling because they may contain needles or biohazardous liquid.\nHighway cleanups are not advised.\nHigh-visibility clothing is required for roadsides.

SUMMARY:MLK Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service! \nPre-Registration Recommended\nWhere – Blakely Harbor Park\nWhen – Monday\, January 15th\, 2024\, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM\nWhat – Join BI Metro Parks and our incredible partners\, including Blakely Harbor Park’s neighbor IslandWood\, Sustainable Bainbridge\, and the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation\, for the annual Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service. Make this day of service a “day on not a day off.” \nConservation projects for all ages are planned\, including planting native wildflowers\, mulching young plants\, and removing invasive species like ivy\, spurge laurel\, and blackberry.  Parks staff and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to share knowledge about the park and its restoration and provide all the tools needed for the job. Join us to work as long as you’re able and enjoy a hot drink to warm up! \nRestoration at Blakely Harbor Park has involved thousands of volunteer hours\, thousands of native plants\, and years of dedicated hard work.  Once the site of the largest mill in the world Blakely Harbor is now a much beloved park\, connecting to miles of trails and hosting beach access and a birding blind.  But restoration work is ongoing with young native plants to care for and plenty of invasive weeds yet to remove.

SUMMARY:Author Visit - J.B. MacKinnon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-hour discussion between J. B. MacKinnon\, journalist and author of The Day the World Stops Shopping: How Ending Consumerism Saves the Environment and Ourselves\, as well as The 100-mile Diet\, and Rebecca Rockefeller\, co-author of Buy Nothing\, Get Everything\, and one of the founders of the world-wide Buy Nothing Project. After the conversation\, there will be a question and answer period\, and an opportunity for book signing. Tickets are here.\n\n The Day the World Stops Shopping envisions a time when we reduce our consumerism by 25%. MacKinnon tracks this possibility by contemplating what it would mean in our lives and the lives of others\, how it would affect us\, and how it could save the planet. His in-depth and wide-ranging research encompasses consumption habits from blue jeans to electricity. He shows how short a time it took us to get to where we are now\, and how we could dial it back to make a huge impact on climate change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJ. B. MacKinnon is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The New Yorker\, National Geographic\, and The Atlantic\, as well as The Best American Science and Nature Writing anthologies. He is also the author of four books of nonfiction\, including the bestselling Plenty (with Alisa Smith)\, widely recognized as a catalyst of the local food movement.  He lives in Vancouver\, Canada.\n\nThis event is made possible by a City of Bainbridge Island Cultural Arts Grant.
