SUMMARY:SB Partner: BI Metro Parks MLK Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Join BI Metro Parks and our incredible partners for the annual Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service.  From 10am-1pm on Monday\, January 19\, volunteers will come together to make this “a day on\, not a day off.” \nConservation projects for all ages are planned\, including planting native wildflowers\, mulching young plants\, and removing invasive species like ivy\, spurge laurel\, and blackberry.  Parks staff and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to share knowledge about the park and its restoration and provide all the tools needed for the job.  Join us to work as long as you’re able\, plus enjoy a hot drink to warm up! \nRestoration at Blakely Harbor Park has involved thousands of volunteer hours\, thousands of native plants\, and years of dedicated hard work.  Once the site of the largest mill in the world\, Blakely Harbor is now a much beloved park\, connecting to miles of trails and hosting beach access and a birding blind.  But restoration work is ongoing\, with young native plants to care for and plenty of invasive weeds yet to remove.

SUMMARY:Beach Exploration for Family and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Join local naturalists out on the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal beach to observe the unique creatures that call the intertidal zone home. You’ll learn about invertebrates\, tides\, shoreline geology\, birds\, and how to identify these things on the beach. \nPark in downtown Winslow. Access the beach by taking the Waterfront Park trail\, crossing the ravine bridge\, continuing on the Waterfront trail across Harborview Drive and behind the condominiums to the beach access. \n\nFall and winter night explorations require a strong flashlight.\nLook for the naturalists wearing neon green vests.\nWear shoes or boots that can get wet. You will be walking in the shallow water along the shore for much of the time. Tall rubber boots are the footwear of choice.\nThe beach can be much colder than the rest of the island\, so wear layers that you can add as necessary.\nBring your kids — they’re great explorers! Dogs should be left at home.\nYou might want the added stability of a hiking stick as the rocks can be very slippery when wet and covered with seaweed.

SUMMARY:SB Partner: KEC presents "The Future of Kitsap's Forests"
DESCRIPTION:The Kitsap Environmental Coalition presents “The Future of Kitsap’s Forests” on Sunday\, October 19\, 3-4:30pm\, at the Village Green Community Center\, 26159 Dulay Rd NE\, Kingston. \nEveryone is welcome! Bring your favorites (cookies\, desserts) to share. \nSpeakers are Frank Stricklin\, founder and past president of Friends of Newberry Hill Heritage Park;  Sue DeArman\, KEC member and naturalist photographer; and Connie Reckord\, program director of preservation\, Friends of Miller Bay. \nThe main presenter\, Frank Stricklin\, is a WSU Stream Steward\, native plant advisor\, forest steward\, and lifelong learner. He begins our series on ecological forest restoration. But first\, a little background on the history of our wooded landscape… \nIn the 1850s\, the forests of the Kitsap Peninsula\, and indeed the whole Pacific Northwest\, began a dramatic transformation. In just 150 years\, the original old-growth forests\, integral to the indigenous tribes of the region for centuries\, had been replaced by managed monoculture plantations of densely planted Douglas Fir\, grown as a commercial crop on a tight rotation. In the face of current environmental challenges\, we are now embarking on a new transformation aimed at restoring healthier\, more natural forest conditions\, with increased diversification to promote sustainability and enhance wildlife habitats. Learn more as we explore the future of Kitsap’s forests.
