SUMMARY:Beach Exploration for Family and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Bainbridge Island Beach Naturalists are planning our first nighttime low-tide beach exploration in several years. It can be a different world on the beach after dark. Come join us as we check it out\, Friday\, January 10\, 7:30 – 8:30pm at the BI Ferry Terminal Beach. \nTo get to the beach\, take the Waterfront Park trail\, cross the ravine bridge\, continue on the Waterfront trail straight across Harborview Drive. Either way\, look for the sandwich board which will direct you to the beach access. Beach naturalists will be identifiable by their bright vests. Come join in. Hope to see you there. \nPreparation: \n\nBring a flashlight to get to the destination.\nThis is a great family event\, but please do not bring your dog.\nWe suggest wearing shoes or boots that can get muddy and wet because we will be walking in muddy\, rocky areas\, as well as shallow water.\nPut on rain gear as the weather dictates.\nCobblestones and seaweed can make footing challenging for some. If that’s you bring your walking support.\n\nParking and Directions: \nParking is easiest and free in downtown Winslow.  Head to Waterfront Park and take the trail to the ravine bridge. After crossing the bridge\, continue on to Harborview Drive. Cross the street and look for the sandwich board\, which will direct you to the beach access.  Or you can use any of the ferry terminal paid lots which are close and walk to Harborview Drive\, which is the street at the stoplight at the top of the ferry waiting zone. Walk down the street and turn left at the sandwich board\, which will direct you to the beach access. Beach naturalists will be identifiable by their bright vests. Come join in. Guest speaker Dylan Mendenhall\, principal ecologist at Haven Ecology & Research\, will give a talk entitled\, “Preserving Biodiversity on a Swiftly Tilting Planet.”  He asks us to “reimagine ecological restoration\, not as a futile effort to reclaim the past\, but as a creative process of navigating our way to the flourishing future that we all know is possible.” \nThere will also be a discussion about our Heritage Parks as possible biodiverse wildlife preserves. \nThis is a free event. Snacks and refreshments are served. (Feel free to share your favorite snack.) \nKEC Presents is one of the activities of the Kitsap Environmental Coalition\, an all-volunteer organization. It presents an environmentally focused topic the third Sunday of each month.

DESCRIPTION:Bring clean items\, along with any relevant manuals or parts\, to the event. Bring up to two items such as: \n\nclothing\nsmall appliances\nlamps\nvacuums\njewelry\nsmall electronics\nsmall welding jobs\nbikes (minor repairs)\n\nThe volunteer fixers will attempt repairs and share their knowledge\, helping you learn valuable repair skills. \nFix-it consultations are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. All participants must check in at the welcome table and be present during repairs. While our volunteer fixers will do their best\, successful repairs cannot be guaranteed. Fixers will attempt repairs on one item at a time. If there’s time\, you can join the line again with your second item. Learn more here. Questions? DESCRIPTION:For the Birds features a jazz quintet performing the original music of Seattle pianist and composer Nelda Swiggett. But this is not just a concert. The performance engages the power of artistic expression — live music\, spoken words\, images and poetry — to connect audiences deeply and emotionally to the scientific realities of climate change. Ultimately a story of hope\, individuals leave the performance feeling empowered to take meaningful action. \nWhy birds? Birds are a part of our daily life experience\, and an inspiring connection to the natural world. But climate change is having a significant and alarming impact on many bird species\, and this should be a wake-up call for all of us. \nThe quintet features Nelda Swiggett (compositions\, piano\, vocal)\, Clif Swiggett (trombone\, percussion)\, Mark Taylor (saxophone\, flute)\, Chris Symer (bass)\, Adam Kessler (drums)\, and the poetry of Jill McGrath. \nFind out more details and get tickets here.

DESCRIPTION:April is Earth Month\, so choose a day to go out and pick up a nearby roadway or trash-strewn area. Maybe you’ll make it a habit and have it become official by adopting a stretch of road to clean up on a regular basis through the City of Bainbridge Island’s Adopt a Spot program. \nIf you don’t have your own grabber\, trash bags and disposal method\, here’s what you can do: \n\nBorrow a grabber from BI Zero Waste. Email Diane Landry to inquire.\nPick up white trash bags at Bainbridge Disposal’s Coppertop office\, 9423 NE Business Park Ln.\, even outside of business hours. (See photo below of bin containing litter bags.) Take a litter cleanup guideline sheet from the bin\, too.\nFill up bag(s) with roadside litter and place next to your own or a neighbor’s (with permission) trash can\, and during April it will be picked up for free. Or you can drop off the designated litter bag(s) for free at the Bainbridge Disposal Transfer Station during April.\nFill up regular trash bags with recyclables and dispose of relatively clean\, non-flat cans and bottles in your regular recycling. Read below for what to do with dirty or flat cans and bottles.\n\n \nLitter Pick-up Guidelines\nBefore you start \n\nChoose a roadway or lot.\nWear bright\, reflective clothing if picking up along a road.\nUse the white Kitsap trash bag if you want to dispose of litter for free.\nBorrow a grabber\, if you like\, from Zero Waste. Request from bizerowaste@sustainablebainbridge.org.\n\nWhen you finish \n\nSet your white Kitsap bag of trash next to a regular garbage can (with permission if not yours) or take to the transfer station and let the booth attendant know how many bags you have. Bainbridge Disposal is tracking how many bags are collected.\nEmpty your bag of recyclables into your curbside recycling cart. (If flat cans get put in curbside recycling\, they tend to get separated with paper at the sorting facility\,  contaminating the paper stream.)\n\nGeneral safety guidelines \n\nDo not pick up anything hazardous\, sharp\, large or heavy. DESCRIPTION:Use heading tags\nand regular paragraph text with bullets\, bold\, italics\, just as you would with a basic text element \nGet ready to be part of something extraordinary at the ReFashion Sewdown Showcase. ​This year the artists participate in an all-day sewing blitz that takes place at BIMA from 10am-5:30pm\, using a curated box of clean scrap pieces\, upholstery samples\, and deadstock textiles otherwise destined for landfills.\nIn addition\, students are presenting the results of their jeans and t-shirt challenge\, where they were tasked with unsewing and remaking jeans and a t-shirt to create new styles. \nIn the evening\, models will descend the grand staircase in completed outfits before the general public and judges\, who will determine the cash prize awards. The public may arrive at 5:30 for nibbles and drinks. The show runs 6:30-7:30. Tickets are only $10. \nGet tickets here.
