SUMMARY:Special Zero Waste Meeting: T&C and Safeway\, Waste Reduction and the COBI Waste Ordinance
DESCRIPTION:T&C and Safeway Directors Talk COBI Waste Ordinance and Waste Diversion\nZero Waste’s meeting will begin with a brief ZW business segment\, followed by presentations by each store’s representatives\, and ending with a Q&A period. \nZoom presentation is here. Forward to 13:22 if you want to skip the Zero Waste program recap.\n                                                                                                                                                                                     \nMarina Heppenstall is the Sustainability Director for Town & Country Markets. She joined the company in 2022 to help advance sustainability initiatives\, including packaging\, carbon reduction\, waste management\, and sustainable food sourcing\, across T&C’s six markets. Prior to joining T&C\, she led client solutions at Sustainable Brands\, a global learning platform for corporate sustainability. Her career in the environmental field has covered a breadth of topics that include event sustainability\, carbon footprint of agricultural soils\, land conservation\, and renewable fuels. She holds a master’s degree in environmental science with a focus in sustainable agriculture. \n                                                                                                                                                                                     \nShane Erickson is director of food safety and environmental at Albertsons/Safeway and Adam Brazeau (pictured right) is Bainbridge Island Safeway store manager. Adam has worked in grocery for 24 years\, starting as a courtesy clerk and working his way up to his current position. Bainbridge is his third store in this role and by far his favorite. \nOur speakers have been asked to include the following in their talk. Some topics may pertain to one store more than the other. \n\nDecision-making around the proliferation of clamshells for cut-up fruits and vegetables and alternatives to non-recyclable clamshells\nInitiatives to increase in-store recycling and composting\, including how food waste in the kitchen and unsold produce are treated/dispensed with\nThe destination in the public-facing three-bin containers (recycling\, compost and landfill) – T&C\nThe destination of the film in the plastic film collection bin\nOpportunities to bring one’s own container for bulk items\nHandling of the waste ordinance requirements: review 2022 accessories rule and how the store has adjusted; comment on 2023 with dine-in durables\, home compostable take-out\, and 25-cent take-out cup fee\nAny other waste reduction/reuse/recycling challenges or initiatives

SUMMARY:MLK Jr. Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:MLK Jr. Day of Service\nMonday\, January 16\, 10 am to 1 pm\, or less—your choice\nBlakely Harbor Park\nShare your strength and skills\, or just come to learn. Make it a day ON\, not a day off. And work as long or as little as you like\, but please come. \nWe learn more every day about how a healthy forest can mitigate global warming\, reduce forest fires\, and bring health and calmness in a busy world. For an example of this\, read this New York Times article detailing how being outdoors can improve mental health and well being. Most of us knew this intuitively\, but its great to see it confirmed.

SUMMARY:Zero Waste: Presentations by Recycling Specialists
DESCRIPTION:                                     \nAt this Zero Waste meeting\, the first 20 minutes will be devoted to recapping ZW activities since our last meeting in March 2022. Then we will have two 15-20 minute presentations with two key people in our recycling system\, who are pictured above: Caitlin Newman\, recycling coordinator for Kitsap County\, and Mike Range\, senior MRF manager for the Pacific Northwest. (MRF stands for materials recovery facility.) One of the MRFs that Mike oversees is Waste Management/JMK Fibers\, where Bainbridge Disposal hauls our curbside and transfer station mixed recycling to be sorted and baled. \nDo you wonder why we can put certain items in the recycle bin but not others? This is the perfect chance to find out the reasons. Are you curious where recyclables go once they leave your hand? Tune in to learn where the markets are. We would like to make sure our speakers know what’s on your mind\, so please send any questions you may have here\, and we will pass them on to our presenters. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Zoom link is here .

SUMMARY:Decorative Holly Bundling for the Annual Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:BI Park and Recreation District is cutting down a nicely-berried holly tree at the wooded area by Owen’s Playground and the Rotary Park ballfield. This will improve three major community resources: 1) The park itself\, which will be liberated from a seed-producing invasive holly tree; 2) The free\, bundled holly bunches will come with a label explaining why holly is bad\, how to dispose of it\, and what to plant instead; and 3) Attract shoppers to the Waterfront Thrift Store Holiday Sale at the BI Senior Community Center. This annual sale is an important source of funding for the BI Senior Center\, an amazingly important resource for people of all ages. \nDetails \n\nWednesday\, Nov. 24 from 2-4 pm – Help with bundling and\, if you like\, choose the choicest branches for your own decorating. Location: the rear of the Senior Center.\nFriday\, Nov. 26 from 1-3pm – Organize the holly into bunches small\, medium and large to give away the next day and choose your own for decorating. Location: the rear of the Senior Center\nSaturday\, Nov. 27 from 9am until gone – Help with the public giveaway by distributing the free holly and cleaning up afterwards.\n\nTo pre-register \n\nEmail Jeannette at jfranks1@comcast.net or\nText 206-755-8461.
