SUMMARY:SB Partner: COBI Paint Recycling Drop-off
DESCRIPTION:The City of Bainbridge Island is hosting a free paint recycling event on Saturday\, June 28\, 9am-3pm\, at its operations & maintenance facility at 7305 NE Hidden Cove Rd\, in partnership with GreenSheen. \nAccepted Materials:\nUrethanes\nOil-based and Latex-based Paints\nAcrylic Paint\nVarnishes\, Shellacs and Lacquers\nPrimers\nClear Coatings \nNot Accepted:\nSpray Paints\, Marine and Auto Paints\nHousehold Hazardous Waste\nElectronics\nPaint Thinner\nDriveway Sealers \nFor questions\, please email GreenSheen. \nWhy are we able to recycle paint in Washington?\nIn 2019\, our state passed extended producer responsibility legislation to make sure residents had a way to recycle their leftover paint. The program is funded through a fee put on all architectural paint greater than half a pint sold in Washington. \nPaintCare is the nonprofit stewardship organization designated to facilitate collection. They in turn collaborate with GreenSheen\, which produces quality\, latex house paint in 18 colors (and costing up to 75% less than traditional paint) by recycling an impressive 95% of the paint. \nThe year-round drop-off site for your leftover paint on Bainbridge is Mallory Paint Store on Hildebrand. Refer to the above list for what is accepted. Other locations can be found here.

SUMMARY:Beach Exploration for Family and Friends
DESCRIPTION:@Rockaway Beach\nWhat to expect when you join us on the beach:\nThis is a great free\, rain or shine family activity\, and is open to the public. Look for the naturalists wearing neon green vests. You will likely get your feet wet\, so boots are recommended\, or shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and that protect your feet.  Rockaway Beach is very rocky and uneven\, great for tidepools and critters\, but can be difficult walking.  A walking stick can be helpful if you might have trouble walking over the rocks.  Please leave your dog at home\, they can be disruptive to the critters we are seeing.  Parking at Rockaway is extremely limited.  Please carpool if you can\, and park diagonally so we can fit in more cars.  Hope you will join us!

SUMMARY:Fix-it Fair Community Repair Event
DESCRIPTION:Bring clean items\, along with any relevant manuals or parts\, to the event. Bring up to two items such as: \n\nclothing\nsmall appliances\nlamps\nvacuums\njewelry\nsmall electronics\nsmall welding jobs\nbikes (minor repairs)\n\nThe volunteer fixers will attempt repairs and share their knowledge\, helping you learn valuable repair skills. \nFix-it consultations are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. All participants must check in at the welcome table by 12:30pm and be present during repairs. While our volunteer fixers will do their best\, successful repairs cannot be guaranteed. Fixers will attempt repairs on one item at a time. If there’s time\, you can join the line again with your second item. Learn more general fix-it fair details here. Questions? Contact: hdowey@gmail.com. \nThe Fix-it Fair welcomes both participants and volunteers. If you have repair skills to share or wish to support this community initiative\, please email Heather Dowey.  \nThis collaborative initiative between Sustainable Bainbridge and BARN\, with support from the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island\, promotes sustainability\, waste reduction\, and community skill-sharing while helping participants extend the life of their belongings. It embodies commitment to building a more sustainable Kitsap community by promoting repair over replacement\, reducing waste\, and fostering a circular economy. By participating\, you’ll join a neighbor-to-neighbor network that values skill-sharing and helps preserve essential repair knowledge for future generations.

SUMMARY:SB Partner: Kitsap Bank "Shred to Fed"
DESCRIPTION:Bring your sensitive or outdated documents for safe destruction and recycling to the Bainbridge branch of Kitsap Bank on September 27\, 9am-noon. There is a maximum of 75# per vehicle. Donations (cash or check) go to Helpline House. \nRemember that shredded paper cannot go in regular recycling\, since there it would be mixed with other types of recyclables and cannot be separated out once at the sorting facility. But shred events are solely paper\, which means it can be baled and sent directly to a pulping mill to be made into new paper. \nIf you can’t make the 27th\, check here for other “From Shred to Fed” Kitsap Bank locations in September and October.

SUMMARY:SB Partner: KEC presents "The Future of Kitsap's Forests"
DESCRIPTION:The Kitsap Environmental Coalition presents “The Future of Kitsap’s Forests” on Sunday\, October 19\, 3-4:30pm\, at the Village Green Community Center\, 26159 Dulay Rd NE\, Kingston. \nEveryone is welcome! Bring your favorites (cookies\, desserts) to share. \nSpeakers are Frank Stricklin\, founder and past president of Friends of Newberry Hill Heritage Park;  Sue DeArman\, KEC member and naturalist photographer; and Connie Reckord\, program director of preservation\, Friends of Miller Bay. \nThe main presenter\, Frank Stricklin\, is a WSU Stream Steward\, native plant advisor\, forest steward\, and lifelong learner. He begins our series on ecological forest restoration. But first\, a little background on the history of our wooded landscape… \nIn the 1850s\, the forests of the Kitsap Peninsula\, and indeed the whole Pacific Northwest\, began a dramatic transformation. In just 150 years\, the original old-growth forests\, integral to the indigenous tribes of the region for centuries\, had been replaced by managed monoculture plantations of densely planted Douglas Fir\, grown as a commercial crop on a tight rotation. In the face of current environmental challenges\, we are now embarking on a new transformation aimed at restoring healthier\, more natural forest conditions\, with increased diversification to promote sustainability and enhance wildlife habitats. Learn more as we explore the future of Kitsap’s forests.
