An All-Volunteer Organization
Sustainable Bainbridge would not exist without volunteers like you! Please contact us if you are interested in getting involved in any of our programs or in any of the opportunities listed below. You are also invited to attend any of our many events or even a Sustainable Bainbridge board meeting.
Additionally, if you have a sustainability idea that you are interested in heading up and would like Sustainable Bainbridge to consider supporting, please contact us to discuss.
Program Volunteer Opportunities
Fix-it Fair Volunteers
Do you have a knack for or expertise in repairing things? Sustainable Bainbridge and BARN co-host three Fix-it Fairs a year and we need fixers of all sorts: Jewelry, small appliances, electronics, clothes and textiles, bicycles, vacuums, lamps. Please email Heather Dowey to get on our fixer list.
Tableware Lending Library Helpers
The Zero Waste Tableware Lending Library lends out free tableware to organizations and individuals for more than 260 events annually. We need volunteer librarians to help manage the inventory and/or liaise with borrowers. Please contact Jane Martin if you are interested in helping to keep this fabulous island resource going!
Forest Restoration (aka invasive weed pulling)
The Weed Warriors pull ivy and other invasives in Bainbridge’s iconic forested areas, making way for native plants to flourish. Go here to see where and when the monthly weed pulls occur.
Scrap Metal Sorting
Drop in the second or fourth Saturday of each month from 11am-noon at the Bainbridge Island Senior & Community Center to help sort magnetic from nonmagnetic household metal that people have dropped off. Email Barbara Ochota with questions. This is a joint program by Zero Waste and the BISCC. To see what is collected, go here.
Clothing Swaps
ReFashion Bainbridge runs a community clothing swap in March and November. We need help on the Saturday set-up day with handling clothes as they come in and putting them in the right departments. Contact ReFashion Bainbridge if interested.
Zero Waste Discard Station Event Helpers
Go to the Zero Waste “Get Involved” page to find out about helping at discard stations (tending recycle-compost-landfill containers) at community events.
Summer Swaps
The ReUse Depot is running a combo children’s clothing/school supply swap at six Concerts in the Park at Battle Point Park this summer on Wednesday evenings, July 22-August 26, 6:30-8:30pm. Volunteers will help at the booth managing the flow of materials. Contact Rachel Knudson if interested.
Rotary Green Team
Sustainable Bainbridge coordinates with the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island to run the Green Team during set-up, sale day, and clean-up at the Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale. In 2026, the dates are July 5-July 11. Descriptions of the different divisions of the Green Team are here. Sign-up is here.
Individual Volunteerism
Weed Warriors spontaneous volunteering!
“Grab a Bad Plant” every time you go for a walk. Find these plants in this great new brochure, “The Sneaky Seven”.
Litter Pick-up
If you’d like to do some trash pick-up and need to borrow a grabber, email Zero Waste. If you’re getting together for a group pick-up, we can lend out about 25 grabbers.
