About Us

Zero Waste Bainbridge Island’s mission is to reduce the amount of waste produced by our community, from acquisition to disposal. We aim to encourage changes in behavior that ultimately lead to a more sustainable use of resources.

Sustainable Bainbridge created ZWBI in 2010. It is managed and run by all volunteers. We encourage you to explore our site, check out news posts and future events, and engage with us if anything strikes your fancy.
Subscribe to our monthly newsletter to keep current on our activities, opportunities for participation and education, and other zero waste news.

Our steering committee consists of Carolyn Hart, Diane Landry (ZW director),  Susan Knell (Terracycle collector), Whitney Lane, Jane Martin (Tableware Lending Library head), Barbara Ochota (education lead) and Anna Ullrich (Reuse/Recycle Guide hawk). We encourage you to contact us if you would like to be involved in Zero Waste endeavors.

Highlights

Bainbridge Arts & Crafts Needs These Items

BAC is sponsoring artist Margie McDonald in an all-ages community art project that repurposes household disposables. You are encouraged to contribute materials beforehand by dropping off these (clean!) items before April 12 at Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, 151 Winslow Way E:

  • hard plastic lids
  • yogurt container lids
  • bottle and jar caps
  • six-pack can yokes
  • mesh plastic produce bag netting

Kitsap Solid Waste
Household Hazardous Waste
Open House

On Wednesday, April 8, 10am-2pm, tour the Kitsap Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 5551 SW Imperial Way, Bremerton, WA 98312 for a behind-the-scenes look at what happens after you drop off your paint, batteries, or automobile products. Staff will answer your questions and show you how they identify, sort, and package hazardous waste for transportation and proper disposal.

Earth Month and Zero Waste

Check out Sustainable Bainbridge’s Earth Month page for loads to discover and participate in in April. Zero Waste-oriented activities include classes on different ways to compost, Bainbridge Arts & Crafts “Tossed & Found” exhibit, Kiwanis Shredfest, and the 10th annual ReFashion Show (tickets on sale now)!

#1 Way to Help Recycling

Put your recyclables in your curbside bin LOOSE. The same goes for the transfer station. Recyclables bundled in plastic bags do not get opened; they are automatically landfilled.

New Zero Waste Poster

Zero Waste has created a supplemental poster to the Bainbridge Island/Kitsap County recycling poster that highlights alternative destinations for some of the items listed in its “Garbage” section.
